<short_description>The Art of Elysium, a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization founded in 1997, encourages working actors, artists and musicians to voluntarily dedicate their time and talent to children who are battling serious medical conditions. </short_description>

Elysium: a place or condition of ideal happiness

MISSION
The Art of Elysium, a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization founded in 1997, encourages
working actors, artists and musicians to voluntarily dedicate their time and talent to
children who are battling serious medical conditions. We provide artistic workshops in
the following disciplines: acting, art, comedy, fashion, music, radio, songwriting and
creative writing.

VISION
The Art of Elysium is dedicated to enriching the lives of artists and critically ill children. We
believe that there is a powerful and mutual exchange of hope and appreciation that
occurs when artists share their time and talent with children battling serious medical
conditions.

The lives of these children are largely filled with suffering, loneliness, fear and
regimen. Artists have the unique ability to help children in need find a creative voice and
discover a sense of individuality and self-efficacy, even in the midst of overwhelmingly
difficult circumstances. In return, those same artists, who have been taken outside of their
normal scope of work, are stretched and enriched in ways they never imagined.
Through this inimitable exchange between artist and child, the artist experiences the
power of giving and the child experiences the power of their own artistic journey.

    <short_description></short_description>

Forty six years ago, Miriam Michael and Yvette Siegel set out to create a unique educational opportunity for children with learning difficulties. The original enrollment of five students has grown to 179 today, and more than 1,000 students have been touched by our founders' vision.

At the Stephen Gaynor School, our mission remains the same as the day we opened our doors: To create a nurturing environment in which children with learning differences can grow academically, socially and emotionally. Our dedicated, distinguished faculty and staff provide a highly individualized and flexible educational program to meet our students' individual needs. Our approach, based on nearly five decades of experience and research, begins and ends with building self-esteem through academic success.

Funds raised from the 2009 Gaynor Gala will support the expansion of our Arts program, and help us continue to provide each child with the tools and strategies to grow and develop as successful learners. A portion of the proceeds will also support the Stephen Gaynor School Community Learning Center, an after school reading program that provides free tutoring to underserved students from the New York City public schools.

<short_description>Join us for the first ever HELP USA Online auction featuring donation from Iron Chef America, David Yurman and others!</short_description>

HELP USA has grown to become one of the largest developers, builders, and operators of service-enriched, transitional and low-income permanent housing in the nation. With programs in Philadelphia, Houston, Buffalo, Las Vegas, Newark, and the New York Metropolitan area HELP USA has developed more than 2,600 units of housing across the country with 30 residential projects across the nation. For the past 25 years HELP USA has provided homes, jobs and support services for more than 250,000 men, women and children. HELP USA continues to pursue opportunities to help the homeless and at risk populations including victims of domestic violence, families, veterans, and people living with AIDS.

Building on 25 years of experience, HELP USA is prepared to meet the evolving challenges facing homeless populations. Consistent with the changing real estate model for urban landscapes, the future is defined with expectations of “mixed use” projects, combining residential, commercial and public space to encourage social interaction. Jobs, services, affordable housing, and family centers to support the family unit will break the cycle of dependency and enable the homeless to reclaim their lives. Living in a pleasant, safe environment elevates clients’ expectations for themselves and motivates them to realize their full potential.

The needs of the populations we serve determine how we expand our services. HELP USA is a fluid organization. In response to growing homelessness among families with children, HELP USA has developed early childhood education programs, enhanced after school programs and created mentoring programs. When statistics pointed to domestic violence as a primary cause of homelessness among women, HELP USA opened two confidentially located shelters, established a resource center, and began an academic scholarship program for survivors of domestic abuse and their children. HELP USA is now expanding its Veterans Services to meet the needs of the expanding Veteran population due to the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.

<short_description></short_description>

One in ten children are born with a vascular birthmark, or 400,000, each year in the United States (based on the 2003 census). Of these infants, 1 in 10, or 40,000 are born with a vascular birthmark that will require the opinion of a medical specialist. There are two categories of vascular birthmarks: hemangiomas, which are the most common tumor of infancy, and vascular malformations. These two categories, while related, are very different. It is very important to know the difference because the treatment is different depending on the lesion type.

Traditional medical protocol in years past was to allow these potentially disfiguring and dangerous lesions to grow and "wait" for regression or involution to occur. New data indicates that most of these lesions do not regress to a cosmetically acceptable appearance, and will, therefore, require some form of corrective surgery. As a result, there is a concerted effort on the part of several prominent physicians and research specialists to change the old "benign neglect" protocol to require more aggressive early intervention. Additionally, almost all benign vascular lesions have been called "hemangiomas." However, many are actually vascular malformations. It is important to have an accurate diagnosis since hemangiomas will regress but vascular malformations will continue to grow. This web site is dedicated to provide the most accurate and up to date information on the proper diagnosis and treatment of hemangiomas and other vascular birthmarks. This information is not only important for parents, it is critical for physicians and other health care providers.

Dr. Linda Rozell Shannon is the President and Founder of the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation. She has her Phd in Education, her Masters of Science degree in Health Education and has been a freelance writer and analyst for over 25 years. In 1994, after her daughter, Christine Mary Shannon, was diagnosed with a hemangioma in 1994, Linda began researching and writing information on vascular birthmarks. In 1995, Linda learned about Dr. Milton Waner, and his work at Arkansas Children's Hospital. After he successfully removed her daughter's hemangioma in one 3 hour out- patient surgical procedure, she teamed up with Dr. Warner, Associate Professor of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Arkansas Medical School (currently (2005) at the Birthmark Institute at the Beth Israel Hospital in NYC) to write the one and only book for parents on birthmarks. Today, Dr. Waner is an internationally recognized authority on the diagnosis and treatment of hemangiomas and vascular malformations. He has successfully treated thousands of child and adults with vascular birthmarks. Since its inception in 1994, VBF has successfully networked thousands of children and adults into treatment, sponsored significant research, educated physicians and affected family members about the diagnosis and treatment of vascular birthmarks and has established chapters all over the world.

    <host_name>cj10</host_name>
    <short_description></short_description>

The Committee of Concerned Journalists is a consortium of journalists,
publishers, owners and academics worried about the future of the profession.
To secure journalism's future, the group believes that journalists from all
media, geography, rank and generation must be clear about what sets our
profession apart from other endeavors. To accomplish this, the group is
creating a national conversation among journalists about principles.

Three Goals

To clarify and renew journalists' faith in the core principles and
function of journalism.

To create a better understanding of those principles by the public.

To engage and inform ownership and management of these principles
and their financial as well as social value.

How Do We Accomplish Them?

To initiate a conversation about standards, the group first issued a
statement of concern, created a network of professionals nationwide, held
twenty-one forums, and conducted surveys and content studies to identify the
core principles journalists share. These were then distilled in 2001 into a
book, "The Elements of Journalism: What Newspeople Should Know and the
Public Should Expect" (Updated and Revised in April 2007). In turn, these
ideas are available to news people through our Traveling Curriculum of
workshops. The work continues through further research, reporting, writing
and discussion.

PHASE ONE is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Phase I clinical research and treatment programs for patients with cancer. Founded by Stacy and Alberto Valner, with a group of friends, all couples with young children who either themselves or a close family member had been affected by a diagnosis of cancer.

Once a new idea or novel drug is identified in the laboratory, the FDA requires three levels of clinical testing prior to the approval of that drug for widespread use. These studies are usually referred to as trials in Phase I, II, or III. The focus of a Phase I trial is to determine the appropriate dose and schedule of a given drug and its side effects. Patients enrolled usually have advanced cancers, which have progressed through standard therapy or for which standard therapy does not exist. Sometimes these patients have been through "everything" and still function extremely well.

With your support PHASE ONE hopes that its efforts to fund Phase I trials and research will help in the fight against cancer, by finding treatments that will transform what might be a terminal illness into one where patients can live a full and productive life.

Conceived out of a decline in political education, Glassbooth is maximizing off the incredible potential of the Internet to empower the public with tools for accessing information. To date, the organizations flagship product is an innovative online model for helping citizens become informed about the positions of candidates in elections.

"We started by understanding the problems of democracy in the United States. We found that voters who are going to the polls carry great misconceptions about where the candidates actually stand; and voters who aren't going to the polls are absent because they don't feel informed enough to make a decision," said Ian Manheimer, director and founder of Glassbooth. "An increasing number of voters, especially young people, are turning to the internet to fill the information gap. We launched Glassbooth to create a simple, interactive way for voters to have complete, easy access to the political information they desire. We believe the process will become a fundamental part of civic life in this country."
